The Hidden Costs of Being Late...

The saying goes “fashionably late” right? Yeaaaa, when running a online and in person business, somehow still managing parenting as a single mom, it can be very easy to get lost in time attending to other matters. Whether you know realize it or not, you’re still paying for it.

Back story: I have a friend who is ALWAYS late. I mean she will delay getting ready or leaving in order to curate the perfect caption for a instagram post. We’ve been late to gatherings, meetings, and different events around the city because she likes to take her time and arrive prepared. I don’t say anything, typically just sit back and observe, but can I be real with you all? IT IRKS MY LAST NERVE!! I was raised: if you’re early, you’re on time, if you’re on time you’re late and if you’re late, you might as well quit, and although somewhat extreme, being early has its perks when it comes to running a successful business (or moving up in the corporate field). You see, I learned early on that being late has a cost, and although you may not see or be able to calculate every incremental lost, eventually they will add up. I like to think of procrastination and the actions that follow as the butterfly effect; the seemingly unrelated action of a butterfly flapping its wings in another part of the world has an effect on you. To some people, the idea may sound far fetched, however before reading the next part; open your mind and calculate how much time you’ve lost by being late or procrastinating.

1) Financially - The financial cost of being late is very impactful and sometimes can seem incremental. Take for instance being 1-5 mins late for work. Five minutes late to work will reduce your monthly salary (5 min x 5 days a week = 25 minutes x 4 weeks a month = 100 minutes or 1 hour and 40 minutes. If you charge by the hour can you afford to GIVE AWAY one whole hour + 40 additional minutes?

2) Safety - When most people are late, they typically are in a hurry or a rush and don’t take all the driving precautions they would normally take, therefore resulting in high car accidents or speeding tickets. With a constant rush and disregard of safety, the wear and tear on your car also results in faster and more constant oil changes, more maintenance, and more gas being burnt and utilized.

3) Professionally (workplace) - When CEO’s say they arrived early and left late; they truly mean it. When you show a disregard for your work ethic by arriving late to events, the office, meetings, it shows your lack of ambition and employers are less likely to promote you.

4) Professionally (entrepreneur) - Being on time when working for yourself can literally mean the rent next month or scraping up every penny to make ends meet. It shows character, patience, ability to adhere to schedules, conscientious of the clients time, able to hold yourself accountable, resulting in a higher quality of work

5) Future goals - When you procrastinate or arrive late, you offset your future goals by not accomplishing your tasks on time. You are seemingly always playing catch up, burning yourself out too fast by always having a never ending to do list.

Don’t beat yourself up if this sounds like I just called you out directly! The good thing is, you recognize you have some of these habits and can change them around! Start with little changes like setting all the clocks ahead 10 min fast! Although logically you know you’ve done this, subconsciously you will behave as if you are late and be able to arrive early or on time. If you already have tried the clock method for 30 days and need something new, then take 5 minutes out of your sunday and upload your schedule to your google cal and turn on traffic alerts. This method will monitor traffic for you and tell you when you need to leave by in order to still make it on time!

5 Ways To Be More Productive and Less Busy


I’m a woman who wear multiple hats,

As a stay at home mom and business owner i often find myself busy but not actually productive. Over the course of the past two years I have pretty much developed a way to become more productive and less busy. Thus having more time to do the things I like to do such as spending time with my daughter or going for morning walks!

Before you begin managing your time, take a step back and observe your natural habits. Are you a morning bird looking for that worm? Or are you a night howl burning through the midnight oil? I realized that although I can wake up fairly early, I am most productive at night, so I plan my days around my natural habits then build plans around that. So find out what type of person, once you can determine what comes natural to you, it’ll be easier to win your day!

1) Spend 30 mins to one hour on yourself every day.

Because I am more of a night owl, the mornings are my time for peace, quiet, and reflection. I don’t like to focus on anybody else but myself so I start out each morning with either 30 minutes of reading a new book or 30 minutes of today’s goals as well as what I’ve accomplished yesterday. By doing this, it allows me to ensure that I am on target and on track with each of my goals and keeping todays at the forefront of my mind.

2) Accomplish your five minute tasks first.

Usually while I’m eating breakfast, I dedicate that time to read my emails, go through the most important ones, and respond to the ones that require an immediate response. For other emails that require a plan of action or attachments, i begin to jot down ideas and schedule a time to respond later during the day.

3) Review tasks and goals for the day.

I like to stay on track with my goals, so after breakfast and emails, I revisit my book that I develop my ideas within, and I review the goals I have listed for today. I check off all of my completed “five minute tasks” from earlier, then outline the TOP 3 things I NEED TO ACCOMPLISH TODAY.

4) Set time limits to work on each project.

Just like your “five minute tasks” start your day with the easiest task or project that uses the least amount of brain power to complete. Immediately after completing the project, be sure you to check it off in your book or journal before moving on to the next task, however if its over a huge project, break it up in sections and set a time limit for what you want to accomplish today. Once your alarm rings, move on to your second task and work until completion.

5) Take breaks.

Minor distractions are sometimes very good to help jog your brain or help increase your creativity, so take a break. Distract yourself for 5 to 10 minutes, walk around, scroll on social media but be cautious of your time. I call this scheduled procrastination. Just like in fitness classes, you get scheduled rest/water/breathing breaks, you should give your brain the same courtesy!

Bonus tip:

Eliminate distractions!! I have a strict rule in my house, there is no television allowed to be on before 5 PM. That means no watching TV while working,  no listening to the TV while sending emails, there’s no need for television during the day, at work, or on your lunch breaks. Every minute you waste watching television, is a minute you lose from increasing your income, and the goal is to live a life you don’t need a vacation from!

The 13th Month

Follow me for a second.. there are 672 hours in a 30 day month. If you take just

  • 2 hours a day for

  • 7 days a week (14 hours)

  • 4 weeks a month (56 hours)

  • 12 months a year

= 672 hours…..

Yep… just taking 2 hours out of your day every day can create enough time that equates to a entire month!

What would you do if you could have an extra month a year to accomplish your goals? Would you be able to rest better knowing you had an extra 30 days to complete your todo list? Would you work harder? Make extra money? 13 months in a year sounds like a dream right? As if its too good to be true it actually is possible and just takes a little bit of focus and diligence on your end. 

“Huh? Eb what in the world are you talking about?” 

Well let me break it down to you; If you take your 2 hour “Real Housewives of Whatever” show and utilize that time spent on your work, you will actually be able to extend your 12 month year into a 13 month year without adding an extra month of bills! 

Here’s the breakdown:

2 hour a day * spent working on your craft or extra income

7 days a week * is a total of 14 extra hours a week. Train yourself everyday for 4 weeks and that equates to 56 hours a month. Once it becomes a habit to work on your craft at least 2 hours per day, everyday, after a full 12 months, you would have spent 672 hours on it, which equates to a 30 day month(14). 

4 weeks a month * (56)

12 months a year

= 672 hours

By eliminating gossip television shows that do not pour into your future, you will create an extra 30 days dedicated to your craft and dream!

Sometimes it’s not that we need extra time in our day, but simply a better way to budget our current time! Hope this helps!
